The Planning Department is responsible for coordinating and processing applications for new development within the city. The department is also responsible for implementing and interpreting the city's zoning ordinance, subdivision ordinance, various design guidelines and the city's General Plan. Moreover, the Planning Department provides preliminary assistance to applicants regarding the various development requirements, assist applicants through the development permit review and approval process, and coordinate the construction phase of the project, from plan check through occupancy inspections, with other city departments.

The dedicated Planning staff is also responsible for future growth in the City. A balance of preserving open space and agriculture, along with planning for future growth takes thought out decisions. One way in which the Planning Department is carefully managing future growth is through the General Plan. With the General Plan the Planning department will preserve our small-town atmosphere and quality of life through slow, well-planned growth.
